then just stopped working altogether. There was never any grinding or anything else wrong besides just not starting. As I said, I just took it apart, cleaned everything, and sanded the the tips/edges of the brushes and the commutator (it'll be fairly obvious once you get in there, if you do). The brushes still were fairly long, and the spring thing behind them felt like it had more than enough pressure/tension to go another 130k+ worth of brush length (not based on anything other than "wow, those brushes still look incredibly long for 130k miles"). If your solenoid or bearings crap out on your Xterra's starter, that's a completely different story. And naturally, I am fully ready to admit that I got lucky, so your experience may vary.
